Ji Eun Kim_ Thesis Statement

Name: Ji Eun Kim

Provisional title: An aesthetic you’ve designed from yourself.

Thesis Statement: ‘Who designed it’, this makes all design differences in the world.

Statement: Even though garments are designed based on human body form, all of its aesthetics and interpretations make those garments are totally depends on each designers’ thought. It has been created many differences who design a garment. Even such designers are inspired similar ideas, their result can come up total variations. Fashion has been redesigned from the past, but it always has been kept the rule of human body shape. It can be long, short, tight, voluminous, or double layered, however, all designers should think about ‘wearable’ and can’t help to ignore it. Then, how designers have been created fashion so brand new in the world? It is because we always have many creative designers who are distinguished each other. They could have similar aesthetics or ideas but never could be same.

As a designer, I try to find many interesting inspirations from various sources, but it brings a matter to a conclusion based on who I am and how I take such ideas with my experiences, even I come with complete different inspirations. It is very important to know who designed and filtered that idea to an actual garment and it can be great sources we would know each other’s thought and ways of communication.

Concepts: Berger, J ‘Ways of Seeing’

-The reaction between what we see and what we know is never settled. […] the explanation, never quite fits the sight.

– The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe.

– Soon after we can see, we are aware that we can also be seen. The eye of the other combines with our own eye to make it fully credible that

we are part of the visible world.

– The uniqueness of every painting was once part of uniqueness of the place where it resided. […] When the camera reproduces a painting,

it destroys the uniqueness of its image. As a result its meaning changes. Or, more exactly, its meaning multiplies and fragments into many

– The issue is not between innocence and knowledge (or between the natural and the cultural) but between a total approach to art which

attempts to relate it to every aspect of experience and the esoteric approach of a few specialized experts who are the clerk of the nostalgia

of a ruling class in decline.

  1. I agree with the above comment. I think your thesis could be much more interesting and deeper if yo figure out a way to incorporate some of the concepts that we covered in other class.. Berger’s reading has a lot of relevant points to our lecture, so I think you can look into that.
