Concepts: Berger, J ‘Ways of Seeing’
-The reaction between what we see and what we know is never settled. […] the explanation, never quite fits the sight.
– The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe.
– Soon after we can see, we are aware that we can also be seen. The eye of the other combines with our own eye to make it fully credible that
we are part of the visible world.
– The uniqueness of every painting was once part of uniqueness of the place where it resided. […] When the camera reproduces a painting,
it destroys the uniqueness of its image. As a result its meaning changes. Or, more exactly, its meaning multiplies and fragments into many
– The issue is not between innocence and knowledge (or between the natural and the cultural) but between a total approach to art which
attempts to relate it to every aspect of experience and the esoteric approach of a few specialized experts who are the clerk of the nostalgia
of a ruling class in decline.
